Scotts Marine celebrated its services to the community during a Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event last week.
The George Town Barcadere event promoted the newest products in marine supplies and accessories and revealed how brothers Stanley and Anthony Scott, along with son Neville, were determined to give the Cayman Islands an equipped marine facility.
Later on, business partners William and David Baines came on board.
“To customers and friends, we promise we will always give you the quality of service that you have come to expect from the Scotts and we are confident we will be able to enhance our services now that we are in the long awaited building,” Anthony Scott said.
The marina has several boat slips with full amenities, including a full-service marine fuelling station, sewage pump out, changing rooms, sanitary facilities and keyed lockers. It also has a boat yard offering full hull and engine repairs and a Scotts Marine state-of-art showroom for boats and accessories.
He also announced the George Town Yacht Club, which will consist of a clubhouse, restaurant and bar on the dockside overlooking the sea on the North Sound, is slated to open in February.
At 16, Stanley went off to sea with National Bulk Carriers. Anthony spent his summers working in water sports.
Upon leaving school, Anthony continued to work in the water sports industry, taking up a post as dive master at Buccaneers Inn Dive Shop in Cayman Brac. When their father opened a concrete block factory in Grand Cayman in 1971, both Stanley and Anthony joined the business and settled in Grand Cayman.
Despite working at the factory, Anthony and Stanley never missed a Sunday of free diving and spear fishing.
In 1975, their father sold the business and returned to Cayman Brac; however, the brothers remained. They went to the bank and, through financing, bought a backhoe and a truck to start their own business. Anthony operated the backhoe and Stanley drove the truck.
The following year, the brothers bought a pipe bending machine and opened a muffler shop to custom build vehicle exhaust systems. They named the business Scotts Exhaust Systems and Heavy Equipment Services.
“When I had to write that at the top of the invoice slips, there was no room left for the details on the paper,” said Mr. Anthony, laughing.
In 1984, they joined forces with their two younger brothers, Arney and Alburns, and started Scotts Equipment Limited. Arney, Alburns and Stanley worked in Scotts Equipment and Stanley managed Scotts Industries.
The year 1985 was another milestone for the Scotts. At that time they were successful in securing the distributorship for Mariner Outboard Motors, a division of Mercury Marine Limited.
Anthony Scott said he was back in his element – the marine business.
“The saltwater in my veins had taken over,” he said. “This business relationship was a mutual and beneficial business as within a year or two we were asked to take the distributorship from Mercury Outboard the same parent company; thus began a very rewarding partnership.”
Scotts Industries, trading as Scotts Marine, continued to grow with the acquisition of numerous dealerships in boats, accessories and other marine toys. At the time, Anthony’s son, Neville, was studying architecture in Florida. He returned home and joined the marine side of the business.
Still, the Scotts would continue to grow. In 1998, through talks by his son with Mike Simmons about property at George Town Barcadere they were able to purchase a piece of prime property and from this was born plans and designs for the Barcadere marina.
“I am proud to announce that the master plan, as well as every individual design for every building in the project, is the product of Neville’s architectural skills,” Anthony Scott said.
